We were both saddened to hear of Carl’s passing. Carl was a kind and gentle soul, anytime we were back in Ontario he was always happy to see us. I remember as a kid whenever I was at Ethel and Johnny’s or if he stopped by my parents house (D’Arcy and Harriet) he would mess my hair up just to get me going and then laugh…and he had a great laugh. Ray always said he was one of best hockey player’s ever to put on a pair of skates in KL, he said he can still feel where Carl’s slapshot hit him in the shin when he was playing Juveniles, he said it left a crescent in his shin pad. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

We were very sorry to hear of Carl’s passing. I can still see him in the touque he always wore, I could never figure out how he rolled it to a point in the front. I can still see Carl standing on a snow bank watching Harold play a hockey game at St. Jerome…Harold’s hands were cold so Mrs. O’Malley stopped the game marched out on to the ice and gave Harold her fluffy gloves. I’m sure Harold was mortified but I can still hear Carl’s roaring laugh at Harold’s expense.

I had a fun visit with Carl on a hot summer night sitting on the porch of the house he shared with Bobby Johnston. We were facing Government Road and it was amazing to see all the people acknowledge him in such a friendly manner. I was amazed at his memory of our youth days in K.L. The details and the precision of the events as well as the names. It was fun. Our sympathy goes out to the Duff family and to Cecelia and all the Biggs Family

My sympathies to the Duff Family on the loss of their brother. Carl was very kind to me in 1988, while I was working in Timmins and went to visit Kirkland Lake for the weekend. He showed my all the landmarks, and where he grew up. I remember he had won the 649. He also sent me home with several poems he had written, some about Aunt Ethel. I wish him peace now, with his parents and maybe with my Dad…catching up.

My deepest sympathy to the Duff family… Carl had the biggest heart– I remember the first time Tom & I went to watch Carl play indoors at the old rink, it was very obvious he had the Duff blood running through his veins,as he excelled , no surprise to us, but the pride showed in Tom s face and eyes… also mine–he came to visit me in Sault Ste.Marie a few yrs. back–and reminised about the good times in K.L.–taylor st. friends amd life…… I miss him — he was like a brother ,as were the Antoniazzi & Conrad families were….. he was especially proud of his Dad ,Mom, brothers and sisters… nieces and nephews…friend syl

My deepest sympathies to the Duff family. Carl & I were childhood friends. We were in the same class at St. Jerome for eight years and I feel there was a special bond between us. I’m glad to have a book of his poems to remember him and his thoughts. RIP, Carl.

Irene Kuchar (Konopka), March 1, 2021

I just heard of Carl’s passing, from my Dad (Leslie Duff). I found it tremendously saddening. Carl, along with Dick, were my favorite uncles. I remember him taking me fishing as a child, sometimes with my Dad, and occasionally just him and I. I remember one fishing trip in particular where Carl ended up with a fishhook on the cheek. I think it was me, but it may have been my cousin James (John’s son) who did it. I have many clear memories of time I’d spent with him, and I treasure them, now more so with his passing. I regret not being more in contact with him as i grew up. I am reading through a book (Are there others, besidedes “Through Their Eyes”…? I would love to know, if there were)of his poetry, and I can see how we were similar in taste and thought and passion. Salut & RIP You made a good impact on me Carl, and I thank You

Uncle Carl

My Uncle Carl was a man everyone knew. It had been a while since I had seen him before his passing but when my father told me, I felt a sadness. He faught hard to have a life full of peace. He had that, within his books and at the library where he spent alot of his time and among long time friends and his community where his life began. At a poetry reading at school I read some of his work from a small book he had published. His words paved the way for my own when I young and so very nervous. I think fondly on that, and that he looked so much like my dad. Hours away from Kirkland, a met a girl from there, studying in Guelph. I asked her if by chance she knew Carl. She smiled, and said, "everybody knows Carl". It was told to me as a boy that he was a great hockey player, and had special a twinkle in his eye. Older now, I see that he was a loveable rouge, a unique character and a person, whom I wish I could have known better. I know he is missed by all his family and friends. And it warms my heart to know he has found rest and eternal peace been in the arms of his mother and father and his brothers and sisters that have already gone to God. Rest well Uncle Carl.
