1930 - 2023

It is with deep sadness the family announces the passing of Helmut John Johanson on Tuesday January 31st, 2023 at the age of 92. Helmut died peacefully at home with his daughter Judy by his side. Helmut was predeceased by his wife Jackie (March 1995) and his son Fred (July 2008). Helmut is survived by his daughter Judy McKnight(Andy) who he depended solely on, his son David(Bonnie) from Edmonton Alberta, his greatest joy for a grandson Andrew Helmut McKnight(Kim) and two great grandchildren Brady and Lucas from Wyevale Ontario.

Helmut came to Canada from Latvia in 1949. He worked 45 years at Macassa Mine in Kirkland Lake, until retirement in 1994. He loved spending time at his cottage on Round Lake, enjoying the company that dropped in, fishing and mostly just sitting in the sun to get his tan.

A big thank you to the PSW’s who took care of Helmut in the mornings.

As per Helmut’s wishes, there will be no service held. Cremation has taken place. He will be buried with his beloved Jackie at a later date.

What a great guy Helmut was! When I was a little younger… and trying to be drift miner… he was my shift boss, checked on me and my partner underground… he’d say, keep trying.. someday you’ll be able to break a round right to the ‘nuts’ … then we sit down and enjoy a smoke break.. then he’d get up and say ‘other kids to see’…
Really respected this man as so many did and do!

We are sorry to hear of the loss of your father, and wish to send our condolences at this sad time. Helmut always had a smile and a great sense of humour.
In the early days at goodfish lake in the old cabin or at the house he always welcomed us to watch playoff hockey in the rec room.
The best story was his fishing the imaginary line on round lake.
When before the judge, the words spoken were "You have an honest face Mr. Johanson" case dismissed.

Sorry to hear of your dads passing. It was always a joy to see him sitting outside on his front deck enjoying the sun. In the summer it was a guarantee he would be there and it became a little piece of our neighborhood since moving to our home.

Helmut's Family

I first met Helmut in 1983 working at the Macassa Mine. One time there was a power failure in the mine and i was trapped in the cage with Helmut, Herman the German, and a couple of Geologists.
We climbed out of the roof of the cage and walked the wooden steps up the shaft to the surface.Helmut kept us all calm.What a strong man he was.Rest in peace.
