Alex was born in Haileybury on November 29, 1917. He survived the Haileybury fire of 1922, spent his childhood in Cobalt and came to live in Kirkland Lake as a teenager. Alex served his country in the Princess Louise Hussars Tank Corp. from 1940 – 1945 in Italy, France and Holland. He was employed by Kosmack and Price and worked for Union Gas retiring as manager of the Kirkland Lake office in 1967. Alex was a member of the Masons, Shriners, Legion and Anglican Church and served many times as Grand Patron of the Eastern Star. He was a highly respected resident in Kirkland Lake, a dearly loved husband, father and grandfather. He will be sadly missed by his wife Jean; four children Alex Jr. (Mary) Timmins, Marjorie Martell, James (Regina) Timmins and David (Sarah) Simmonds; 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Felicity Taylor and sister in law Isabelle Timmins. Alex was predeceased by his sisters Elsie Topliss and Helen Mallette and brothers Jack, George and Harold Timmins. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Monette & French Funeral Home on Thursday, August 13, 2009 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 14, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Peter Panabaker officiating. Alex will be laid to rest in the Haileybury Cemetery. Donations in Alex’s memory may be made to St. Peter’s on the Rock Anglican Church (P.O. Box 692 Kirkland Lake, ON. Even though I never had the privilege to meet James Alexander Timmins, I know that he was a good man. I know this because I worked with his son Alex (Jr.) to the close of our public health careers in April, 2007. If it be true that apples can tell you about the quality of the tree, Alex (Sr.) was a solid citizen, a fun father, an honourable man – a true example to his family, friends and community. Over the five years Alex (Jr.) and I worked together, he would tell me of the activities and adventures he had shared with his father over their many years, of the war service his father had (apparently reluctantly) told him of in Europe and of the enjoyment Alex (Sr.) received whenever the family gathered about. My colleague shared these stories with a decided warmth and enthusiasm â the kind of warmth and enthusiasm which can only come with love and earned respect. Helen and I are very sorry for the familyâs loss and send our warmest condolences! ⦠and we apologize for not being able to be with the family at this time. Alexander Timmins (Sr.) will be missed. Kirkland Lake will miss him, too. God rest his soul!
