DeLenardo, Joseph C. - Obituaries | Timiskaming Funeral Cooperative

DeLenardo, Joseph C.

DELENARDO, Joseph C.

1951 - 2021

Joseph Coleman DeLenardo, of Kirkland Lake, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2021 surrounded by family, after a lengthy illness.

Born to Joseph and Francis (nee Larocque) DeLenardo, Joe was one of six tightly knit siblings. He grew up in Kirkland Lake, and served his community on several boards, as well as being the Director of Finance with Timiskaming Child and Family Services until his retirement.

Joe loved the outdoors, spending as much time at the cottage or the cabin as he could. He was a fabulous cook and loved to recreate many of his family's special recipes.

Those who knew him would know that if he could choose to do anything in this world, Joe would choose to be surrounded by family and friends. Of all the roles Joe held, he cherished his role as "Poppa" to his two granddaughters most.

Joe is lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years Debra (nee Murphy), his brother Shawn (Anita) DeLenardo, his sister Tarsilla Deveraux, his daughters Lisa (Byron) Marrello, Kimberly (Brad) Comish, and Christina DeLenardo, his granddaughters Adriana and Layla Comish, and many nieces and nephews.

He joins his parents, his brother Albert, his sisters Corinne Jablonski and Veronica Axcell, and his godson Shawn "Shimmer" DeLenardo in Heaven.

A Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 28th, at Holy Name of Jesus Parish followed by a luncheon at the parish hall. COVID-19 restrictions will be in place.

Private interment will follow at a later date.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to his Nurse Practitioner, Sandra Dal Pai, Shannon Carey from Home and Community Care Support Services Northeast, Kirkland Lake Fire Services, the staff in the Emergency Room and on the fourth floor at Blanche River Health - Kirkland Lake Site, the paramedics, Dr. Cano, Dr. Bowen, as well as the medical staff at Health Sciences North. Everyone went above and beyond with their compassion and care.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Northern Cancer Foundation  ( https://www.ncfsudbury.com/ ) or mailed to Health Sciences North, 41 Ramsey Lake Road, Sudbury, ON P3E 5J1, Holy Name of Jesus Parish (39 Kirkland Street, Kirkland Lake, ON P2N 2G3) or charity of your choice.

Joe was a special man and will be missed by many. I was fortunate enough to begin my career under Joe’s tutelage, and I couldn’t have asked for better, as he always supported his staff and was not only supportive with constructive criticism, but also acknowledgement when someone went above and beyond. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you during this difficult time.

I’m so very sorry for your loss. He was a kind man with a great smile. I just wish I had gotten that last cinnamon cake to him but I love that he called me the monkey bread lady! Christina, you have so many great memories of your Blue Jays trips that you got to share with your Dad. I’m sure he’ll be right there beside you at every one! He fought a long, hard battle, but every time I saw him he had a smile. I’m so sorry to all of you who are left, but I’m happy his pain and suffering are over.

We are so sorry for your loss. Joe was a great person and I am glad that he retired early so that he could spend more time with his family which meant everything to him. I felt blessed that I got to know Joe through my involvement on the Board of Directors of the Timiskaming Child and Family Services for many years. Joe was well respected in the Child Welfare sector and in his local community as evidenced by the number of boards he served on. We want you to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Debbie Delenardo and her three Daughters.

Joe was a breath of fresh air when he came to work with us at Timiskaming Family and Children’s Services in the 1970’s. His personal integrity from his first workday endured and Timiskaming benefitted from his devotion to the community he served so well. Joe was a true Kirkland Lake son and he set an example for me of how important that is. In a word, Joe was and is the epitome of honest common sense Northern Honesty and caring. Joe cared about who you were and who he was consistently, in that order. His job was to monitor the finances on behalf of us all and he devoted himself totally to that pursuit. His focus remained outstanding and his example will endure. Personally I trusted Joe and was able to maintain my professional balance for many years of service thanks to his example. Of course when Joe asked a favour, I always paid close attention. I can see his smile at this observation. Can’t you!
