DOUPE, Michael Joseph

1961 - 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Doupe, on September 24,2023 at his cherished home on the shores of Lake Temiskaming.

Mike was born April 6, 1961 in Port Perry Ontario to John Joseph Doupe and Rosetta Marlinne Doupe (née Stone). He is pre-deceased by his father and elder sister Marcelle, survived by sister Suzanne and brother David. Mike leaves behind a legacy of love in the form of his four children: Jacob, Micah, Abraham, and Michael, as well as his beloved grandson, Solomon.

A thoughtful and articulate man who did not shy away from controversy, Mike boldly engaged with others with intellect and conviction. He pursued his education at Royal Roads University in Victoria, B.C, received an undergraduate degree in Economics from Dalhousie University in Halifax, N.S, and later, a Law Degree from Western University in London Ontario. After completing law school, he articled in Toronto before moving to New Liskeard, where he honed his legal skills under the mentorship of Owen Smith. Michael went on to establish his own esteemed law practice in the area, where he served clients with passion and integrity for three decades. Mike's dedication extended to nurturing legal talent, as he guided aspiring lawyers and staff on their professional journeys. Beyond the courtroom, Mike was a talented writer and poet, with a particular fondness for crafting limericks. For many years, Mike wrote letters to the editor in the Temiskaming Speaker, which sparked local appreciation and debate alike. He possessed an abiding appreciation for art in all its forms, amassing a diverse collection of multimedia paintings and sculptures, created by artists who were dear friends of his. His collection of artwork adorned both his office and his home, serving as a testament to his deep connection to the artistic community he held so close to his heart. Each piece told a unique story, reflecting the artistic journeys of his cherished friends and the beauty they brought into his life. Passionate and dedicated, Mike's work-life balance was a testament to his commitment, as he lovingly embraced his role as a devoted father to his daughter and three sons.

Michael may have left the party a little early, but not until he fully enjoyed all that was being offered.

Family and loved ones

Greetings,

I was saddened to read about your loss in the Globe & Mail this morning. Mike and I met while he was at Western studying Economics and then Law. He was articulate and bright, yet someone who also appreciated that life is more than simply working hard. Years later he visited me in Florida where I was an assistant professor, after he had started his legal career in Ontario, and I was reminded what friendship meant. We shared so many experiences, and I am smiling remembering some of the more memorable ones.

My thoughts are with you all.

Jeff

Mike's Family

I was sorry to hear about Mike's passing, much too early. Mike and I worked together at the Smith law office before we each moved on. I'm sorry I lost touch, but look back on some good - and some interesting - times when we overlapped.

I'm glad to see that Mike has four loving children, and wow, a grandson, too. Condolences to all of Mike's family and friends.

Doupe Family

My deepest condolences. I met Mike when he and Jacob came to visit David in Vancouver. We spent a few days together. It was a pleasure meeting another of David’s siblings and nephew. The visit was short but I have fond memories of deep discussions and good dinners. May Mike RIP.
