MATTSON, Nancy

1935 - 2023

Nancy passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 27th, 2023 at Englehart and District Hospital at 88 years of age. Nancy was predeceased by her loving husband, Helge, of 61 years.

Proud mother of Cindy, Wanda, Eric (Ingrid) and Aaron (Sandra). Cherished Grandma to Kaitlan, Kayla and Elsi. She was predeceased by her father, Yrjo Branny, mother, Amalia Selma Maki, brother, Jorma Branny and grandparents Hjalmar and Ida Lindros. She considered Signe (Sally) and Sven (Spin) Wallsten her adoptive parents.

Nancy’s greatest joys were her family, her close friends and the endless wonders and glory that Mother Nature provided. To know her is to know that she loved wildlife, befriending the many creatures that inhabit the woods by the family cottage that she and Helge built. Her family was inspired by her appreciation of nature, hard work ethic and the importance of helping others.

In her youth, she was an accomplished athlete, a member of the Finnish sports clubs, winning many events at competitions throughout northern Ontario. She was a tiny but mighty competitor in the sports of track and field, gymnastics and cross country skiing. As an adult she continued to participate in sports activities including cross country skiing, bowling and curling and became an enthusiastic figure skating super fan with her dear friend, Jenny, which gave her the opportunity to do some travelling. Her other hobbies included ice fishing, mandolin and accordion playing, reading poetry, playing cards, dancing and gardening.

In the mid-1950’s she worked at Eaton’s in Kirkland Lake, first at the switchboard then in the accounting department. After she married, she devoted her life to caring for her children and husband. Though born in Canada, she helped to maintain her Finnish heritage by speaking the language and cooking traditional dishes. She embodied the Finnish SISU spirit.

It was a pleasure to have Nancy (nan) as a nany to my family. We developed such a neighborly loving connection. ️ we will definitely miss her beautiful smile and motherly advice, as well as her stories with Helgie. So thankful to have such wonderful memories.
I gained two beautiful older sisters that I so needed.. ..and will cherish that for years to come as well. Knowing the two oldest sons, the Mattson legacy will carry on with great pride out at Round lake for years ahead. May God bless you all throughout this difficult time.
Love Cheryl, Heather and Adam Doner.
Rest in peace my dear friend, and nany Nancy. Xoxo ️

Wanda

Dear Wanda:

I am sorry to hear of your Mother's passing away. I hope you can be comforted by the good Word of God. I encourage you to read Psalms 22, 23, 24.

I remember you as a very good student in either Grade 5 or 6, I think. That's about 50 years ago!

Warmly,
Murray Pratt
