ABE AIDELBAUM

With great sadness, the family announces the passing of a wonderful dad, grandfather, father-in-law and friend at age 93 on November 25, 2021. He will be dearly missed by his sons Stephen and Martin, daughters-in-law Tanis and Barbara, grandchildren Robert, Shannon, Samuel, David, Katrina and Eytan and his companion Patricia Hurst. Abe was predeceased by his wife Marianne Aidelbaum (nee Kokotow) and his parents Carrie and Saul Aidelbaum. His wishes were to have a memorial service with his family and friends in summer 2022.

Abe’s family would like to thank all the kindness and support expressed by everyone during this time. Special thanks to a true friend, Dr. Jim Rumball, for his unwavering friendship and loving care.  We are also grateful to Dr. Augusto Estrada, who helped sustain Abe’s quality of life and dignity for the last year.

As a teenager, he developed a love of skiing at the Kirkland Lake Ski Club in Culver Park. Recognizing the need for a more significant hill, he was one of the founders of Raven Mountain Ski Hill and the ski school. He worked for many years in the family business “Saul’s”, but at age 52, he changed career paths and started North Gro Development producing seedlings for reforestation.  As president of North Gro, he worked with the University of Toronto, Faculty of Forestry and helped take several small-scale research projects to commercial viability.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Abe’s memory can be made to a student bursary set up at Northern College, Kirkland Lake Campus in honour of the years that Abe served as a member of the Board of Governors (1975-1981) and as Chairman of the Board (1978-1979). In his years of service to the Northern College Board of Governors, Abe was a key contributor to creating the James Bay Education Centre in Moosonee, Ontario. To make donations to the Abe and Marianne Aidelbaum Memorial Bursary, please go to the following: www.northernc.on.ca/donate/ .   Click the “Direct My Donation to” drop-down box to access the correct bursary.

We are so fortunate to have met and dined with the awesome Abe - especially at his cottage. Our hearts and open arms go out to you, your family and Pat. Let the grief flow through as it chooses to - ebbing at times and gushing forth when you least expect it. "As long as we live, they too will live; for they are now are a part of us; as we remember them."

My deepest condolences for your family in this time. I can’t help but remember all the amazing times we shared together with Abe. The stories, jokes, fantastic meals and delicious scotches by the water at Cedar Cove, where Abe loved to be. And who can forget that 90th birthday party! When I talk about Abe to my friends back home I always brought up his humour, wit and sharpness and he never lost it throughout the years I’ve known him. Cheers to an amazing man who will be missed greatly, but his legacy never forgotten.

We were truly saddened to hear of the passing of your dear father. We were fortunate to have met Abe, and fondly remember his wit, intellect and kindness. Evidently, qualities he passed on to his family. Love is immortal and memories are portable. Abe's love and the memories you share of him will go with you wherever life takes you.

It was an honour for us to get to know Abe over the past years & it was obvious how much he loved all his family. His partnership with Mom ( Pat ) was loving and supportive. He was always interested in many topics and willing to have open discussions. He was generous, kind and a strong supporter of his community. Sending our love and warm thoughts to all the family.

Pat and the family

Sending love to Pat (my grandma) and Abe’s family - you’re all in my thoughts in this tender time. I valued Abe’s generosity as a thoughtful host whenever we were up North and visited his place- he always made a point to make us feel welcome & comfortable. It was clear how much he cared for his family and my grandma. I hope your many good memories are bringing comfort though the loss.
