Fuhringer, Albin

FUHRINGER, Albin

1949 - 2024

Albin Janos (John) Fuhringer passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 18, 2024 at the age of 75 in his home near Englehart, Ontario.

Al lived in Canada for most of his life, however he was born in Törökbálint, Hungary a few years after World War II. His parents fled with their young children, including Albin, to escape dangerous turmoil during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. The family made the arduous journey to Belgium where they decided to immigrate to Canada because of its peaceful reputation. They travelled to France and boarded a ship to Montreal Quebec where they settled for several years.

When Al was a teenager, the family moved to the Niagara region of Ontario to become farmers. It was there that he started his career and family before moving near Orilla with his wife and children. They lived there for many years, enjoying a lifestyle that included more hunting, fishing, and trapping. He developed extensive knowledge and skills as an outdoorsman and was President of the Ontario Trappers Association. The family then moved to the countryside near
Englehart in 1986 and he secured employment at the waferboard mill (now Georgia Pacific) where he worked until retirement. As an experienced and avid hunter, he preferred the challenge of pursuing the largest black bears. He enjoyed wood-heat and the solitude of
wilderness. He was a true Northman.

Al was an interesting man who spoke several languages including English, French, Hungarian, as well as some German and Czech. He was well-read with a keen interest in human cultures, cuisine, music, and arts. Al was an excellent cook. He was equally at ease recreating traditional rustic European family recipes as he was experimenting with Modernist Cuisine found in his many cookbooks. He was musically talented and could play many instruments by ear including
guitar, keyboard, harmonica, saxophone, clarinet, and more.

Albin was predeceased by his parents Anton Fuhringer and Elisabeth (née Vrana), older brother Tony, sister-in-law Sandra, brother-in-law Albert, daughter Teresa, and cherished granddaughter Jenna. Albin is survived by his siblings Elizabeth, Mary (Craig), and Frank (Heather-Lee), children Anthony, Derek (Diane), Melissa, Candy (Andrew), and Nadine (Chad), and grandchildren Kylie, Cash, Abygail, Ruby, Iris, Emily, Quill, and Jude.

A public memorial visitation will be held Sunday January 28 from 2-4pm at the Englehart Timiskaming Funeral Cooperative (formerly McDonald Funeral Home). All are welcome.

All who loved him

I have never met you, but see you as kin. Our family story is very similar, and I know it was a hard life that Danube Schwabian blood would be able to survive with courage, intelligence, and pure will of faith. Failure and fear were never an option. The work ethic of rebuilding, and work in and with the land was always in our lineage. Anyone with an "ing" in their surname is the oldest origin of name, and Europe was at one time, ruled by us, from the Austrian alb. Merovingian long hair kings. So, Godspeed Uncle, and may your family take comfort in knowing that by humbling ourselves, we always found a way.
