HURD-GUIDER, Doness

1940 - 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Doness Hurd-Guider at the age of 82 years. She was born in Kirkland Lake on February 29, 1940 and was proud to be known as a leap year baby. We said good bye to her at the Kirkland & District Hospital after a lengthy illness on Sunday May 8th, 2022.

She is survived by her loving husband and best friend of 30 years, Gordon Guider, her brothers, David (Linda) and Donald (Linda), her children Jeffery (Christine), Trevor (Rosalee) and Dianna (Frank). She is also survived by her 4 grandchildren Jessica, Robert, Brittany, Trevor Jr. and special friends Elsie Walters, Crystal Sponagle and Alison Whyte. She was predeceased by her parents Donald and Esme Hurd.

Doness attended high school at Branksome Hall, All Girls School in Toronto. She then went on to attend Art College and worked at her first job in Interior Design. She later worked for Canada Post for 23 years holding many positions ending as a Supervisor. After retirement she volunteered her time for over seven years and assisted in reviving the Victoria Hills Community Center in Kitchener, Ontario. She returned to her hometown of Kirkland Lake in 2003 with the love of her life by her side.

Doness led a very interesting life; she loved life, lived every day to the fullest and smiled often. Her favorite pastimes were travelling the world with her beloved mother and later North America with Gord. She loved the outdoors; the family cottage in Kenogami, her camp in Otto, traveling in her Boler trailer and motor home, and canoeing many waters. She was an excellent seamstress and used her talent in interior design and clothing. She loved her family and the many friends that she and Gord made everywhere they travelled. She also loved to spend countless hours on the phone with Trevor while he was driving his rig.

Thank you to the following services for Doness’ care over the last 2 years; VON, Closing the Gap, Home Care, the staff at Kirkland Pharmacy, the Medical team at the Kirkland & District Hospital and St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.

Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held at a later date.

Doness, you will be missed by many family and friends, until we meet again...

Doness' family + brothers

I enjoyed running into your mom during the summers in Kenogami. Used to see her at the chip truck at McPherson's and we always had a few laughs. I loved the story about when she went in to tell her boss she was going to retire so he "better get used to doing his own work!!!" She so loved the lake, the North and people from the North....It's something we had in common: must be something in the water!? My sincere condolences. Keep the memories alive!

Gord Guider

Gord, you were clearly the love of Doness's life. She was the most organized 'unstoppable' person I had met when we both began working at a multi-level department store in 1962 for the nicest gentleman, whose son-in-law managed the business on the SW corner of Bay and Bloor. Doness was ahead of me at OCA and she was already employed by Mr. Max Sheffield when I was hired in the drapery/slipcover division on the main floor. Doness was a natural and taught me the ropes of their order forms. The cutting room, and all the seamstresses made the custom orders on the floor below. After the infamous Son-in-Law bankrupted the company, 5 of us got together and opened up Kingsway Drapery on Bloor Street west of the Humber River where Oleander Floral Design is now located. Doness decided not to join us, she stayed with Greg - later I was their Maid of Honour. I met my future husband in Paul Skidmore's office in the back of the store and Doness agreed to be my Matron of Honour for October 24/1964.

Please accept our sympathies. Doness was our neighbour on Lake Kenogami for more than 20 years. She always took the time to chat and would always have a colourful story. RIP Doness
