CARHART, John

1944 - 2025

It is with great sadness that the family of John Carhart announces his
sudden passing on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at the age of 81 years.
John was born on July 8, 1944, in Kirkland Lake to Margaret and
Raymond Carhart.

Growing up in Kirkland Lake he lived his life to the fullest, fishing, “hunting”, travelling out west and going to Expo67. There are newspaper articles to confirm some of these adventures. In 1972, John met Kathy at the Red Pines thanks to Freddie McKinnon introducing them.

He worked at Northern Telephone until his retirement in 1997. Timmins was home for 27 years where John curled at the Dome-a passion he had enjoyed in his younger years. John and Kathy spent many years travelling, visiting family and friends and cruising the Caribbean. John always said that going away is great, but coming home is better.

In 2005, on Kenogami Lake, beside the family cottage built by John and his father, John and Kathy built a new home – a place where family and friends have always been warmly welcomed.

Known for his unwavering love for his family, John always said that his greatest accomplishment in life was his marriage to Kathy for 51 years, his children and his grandchildren to whom he was “Pa”. Pa loved his grandchildren and enjoyed passing on many traditions (some good and others maybe not so good). He created core memories through his nicknames (Jacobi), cards, walks in the bush, racing sticks through the culverts, jokes, games and many puzzles.

He is survived by his sister Ruth (Burton), wife Kathy, daughter Kari Lyn (Andrea) and son Mark (Kristen) and 3 grandchildren Luke, Jake and Willa Mac.

Family was everything to John and he will be missed by his brothers in law Dave (Shawna), Paul (Gloria) and nieces Trina (Mike), Shawna (Trevor), Kirsti (Conor) and Breana (Ryan), nephew Matthew (Kristin) as well as Ali, Madison, Calum and Jansen.

John was a strong soul with a quiet stability that brought calm and peace to any situation. He was a constant steady presence in our life, always there for us, whether it was playing mini sticks after a long day of work or early morning swim practices. He was our go-to person explaining how things work, why things are the way they are and
guiding us through some of life's bigger challenges. We are grateful for
all the memories at Kenogami, New Liskeard, Kirkland Lake, Timmins, and many other places around the world. He shaped us through his hard work, quiet strength, and loyalty. He taught and showed us the meaning of community, friendship and kindness.

Community for John was Kenogami and Edgewater Village. He was happiest at these places, surrounded by extended family. John was a versatile person and enjoyed helping others with all his skills. He spent many hours with friends, whether at the Lake, at Tim Hortons in town, or down south. Together Tony, Badge, Jimmy, Dave, Donald, Wayne and Rick were plumbers, electricians, civil engineers, comedians, and helped out whenever needed. John served on the Local Service Board of Kenogami and District as he cared greatly for the community and the Lake. At Tim Hortons the crew debated and tried solving many of the world’s issues. Down south the debates continued, and many clocks were repaired with Richard and Louis. He was well known as the “IT guy”, helping many people around the Lake and down south.

John will be reconnecting with Lynne, Badge, Potts, Jack R, Pilgrim, Terry and Doug where we are sure there are many stories to be told. To go along with who John was as our person, love your family, help folks out when you can and lift your feet up when you drive over the train tracks!

Thank you to the health care teams from EMS, Blanche River Hospital (Dr Stephanie Beckett and Dr Brian McPherson) and Health Sciences
North ICU (Dr Mark Hewitt and Dr Rob Anderson) for their excellence, empathy and compassion in such a difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s name may be made to the
Hilliardton Marsh Research and Education Center, the Kenogami Community Hall or Blanche River Hospital.

A celebration of John’s life will be held in the spring/summer 2026.

John’s obituary perfectly sums up the person he was. He loved to sit outside his condo at Edgewater and welcome all who came to sit with him. He was “Mr Bingo” on Wednesdays and Mr Fix it” whenever needed. Edgewater village has lost a great friend.
We loved spending time with the two of you over the years.
He always lit up when talking about his family, especially his three grandchildren.
We are heartbroken over your loss and the loss of one of our extended family members. Sending much love.️
Rest in peace John.

Wendy and I were shocked at the sudden passing of our friend John from Edgewater! He was the rock of your family a true gentleman and one of my most favourite men in our village. John had such a wonderful way about him and made me comfortable and welcomed the first time I met him. No fanfare just plain kind common sense and will miss facebooking with him and agreeing on our southern border politics. May God bless you John and Kathy I hope you gain strength in dealing with John’s passing by reading all of the beautiful tributes made by family friends and associates. We lost a good one for sure!

Whether it was the way he’d throw his head back in laughter, or the cheeky grin and glint in his eyes when he snuck an extra cookie, or the huge hugs he’d give every time you saw him - John always made you feel cared for and reminded you of the important things in life: Family. The Lake. Laughter. Community. We will miss John tremendously.

It was great reading and learning so much about John. We had to laugh at the comment about Pa passing on traditions good and some not so good, I ask Dale all the time if she is OK with some of what Autumn's Papa is teaching her. I feel your children's answer would be the same as my daughters, "of course Mom, he loves Autumn so much, anything they enjoy together is good". I am sure John will live on with his children, grand-children and friends, at home and at Edgewater forever through all the great stories that will be told forever. Please know John and I are thinking about you and sending you love ️ and prayers during this time.

Dear Kari,
Although we never had the chance to personally meet your dear father in person, we want you to know how close we are to you at this difficult time.
The people we love leave deep traces in our hearts: their way of being, their voices, their gazes continue to live on in us even when we can no longer embrace them.
May the memory of your father accompany you with tenderness and, over time, become a silent but bright presence.
