It is with sadness that the family of Joan Madigan (née Smith) announces her peaceful passing, at the age of 91, surrounded by her family, following a short battle with cancer.
Joan will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Sandra (Pat) Leclerc; Grandchildren Leanne, Robert, Trina, Jodi, Braiden, Kim, Trisha, Nicky, Joan, DeAnna, Jason, and Stacey; 18 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great granddaughter.
Joan was very recently pre-deceased by her loving companion and travel buddy, Ed Parrington, and will be dearly missed by his daughters Brenda, Karen and Jane, as well as their children and grandchildren. Also left to mourn are Joan’s dear friends Bette Leonard and Irma Doupe.
Joan was pre-deceased by her parents Gordon and Vivian Smith; her children David Leclair, Carol Lambert, and Danny Leclair; her brothers Robert Smith and Jack Smith; her husband of 10 years and father of her 4 children, Edward Leclair.
Joan was born February 16, 1934 in Kirkland Lake where she grew up and later started her own family. In 1965, the family moved to British Columbia where Joan eventually started her career in healthcare in various positions including dietary, and nurse’s aide. She was passionate about her work in several nursing homes over the years. She returned to Kirkland Lake to care for her mother in 2005 and remained here until her passing.
In recent years, Joan enjoyed traveling with Ed, coffee time at McDonald’s, playing cards and board games, enjoying sweets, her daughter Sandra’s cooking, and watching her great-grandsons’ hockey games. Family was important to Joan as was evident by the numerous photos that adorned the walls of her apartment. She never missed a birthday, anniversary, or special date by sending cards, notes, and gifts.
The family would like to express our sincere and heartfelt gratitude for the care Joan received at Blanche River Health and Health Sciences North. Extra special thanks to Dr. Kurki for her compassion, empathy, and professionalism, as well as to Dr. Spiller for the care and attention in making Joan feel heard.
In following Joan’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private burial will occur at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joan’s name to the Blanche River Health Palliative Care Unit in Kirkland Lake.
