Sullivan, Mervin John

SULLIVAN, Mervin John

1933 - 2021

SULLIVAN, Mervin John –

In Loving memory of Mervin Sullivan who passed away at Blanche River Health – Kirkland Lake Site on Tuesday November 9, 2021 surrounded by his loving family.

Mervin was predeceased by his parents John and Elizabeth (née English) Sullivan and his sister Claire Conrad.

Merv was born and raised in Kirkland Lake and has spent most of his lifetime here. He is very devoted to his hometown. Merv truly loved the north and everything about our community, especially the people who live here.

Merv was a proud business owner of Teck Insurance for 40 years. His dedication and loyalty to his hometown was apparent by his many hours on the ice coaching minor hockey, and years sitting on the Hospital Foundation Committee and Hospital Board. In addition Merv also dedicated 40 years to the Volunteer Firefighters. During this time Merv and Jenny made many lifelong friends. When you hear his name you can’t help but think of the spoons! Along side his brother in law Glenn they entertained at countless events and he became known as the Spoonman. He even had the opportunity to play with the cast of Riverdance in Toronto! Mervs greatest joy was his family. He was genuinely kind to everyone he met and his recognizable laugh put a smile on everyone’s face. He will be missed by many.

He will be forever missed by his beloved wife of 60 years, Jenny (née Jarvi); their loving children John (Janice) Sullivan, Diane (Bruce) Dudgeon, Myles Sullivan (Melissa Anwatin); their grandchildren Keegan, Liam, Colin, Leah, Jada, Jema, Brenna, Shanna, Zach and their precious great grandchild Iris. Mervin is also survived by his sister Ann O’Grady and his brother-in-law Glenn Conrad as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended families.

The Sullivan family will welcome friends at French Family Funeral Home (111 Burnside Drive, Kirkland Lake, ON P2N 3L1) on Friday, November 12, 2021 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Name of Jesus Parish on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. We will be Facebook live from TimiskamingFC facebook page starting at 10:45 a.m. for those who cannot be in attendance physically.

The French Family Funeral Home requires that all patrons must provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and identification prior to entering our establishment.

In keeping with Merv’s simplicity, we ask that you wear comfortable clothes, no suits please.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blanche River Health Foundation – Kirkland Lake Site (145 Government Road East, Kirkland Lake, ON P2N 3P4) or to Holy Name of Jesus Parish (39 Kirkland Street, Kirkland Lake, ON P2N 2G3).

The family would like to thank all hospital staff for their care and compassion shown towards Mervin during his stay. Your acts of kindness will forever be remembered. A very special thanks to Betty Smallwood, Sherry, Chloe, Sandy and Jacob for their constant attention and the many hours of care provided to Mervin. Thank you to the wonderful dialysis team who gave Mervin their utmost loving care, you were like family to him.

To the Sullivan Family

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you during this difficult time. Merv was a truly wonderful Man, Husband, Father and Friend who will never be forgotten for all the joy and care that he brought to the world. He was an amazing listener…always making time to sit and chat. He would light up a room with his laughter and stories. In my mind I still picture him playing the spoons with the cast of Riverdance with a huge smile on his face. A true Legend who will live on in all our hearts for years to come.
“May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sunshine warm upon your face. May the rains fall upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.” Rest In Peace Merv.

Jenny, John, Diane, Myles and, families:

I knew Merv my entire life. Memories that come to mind are him sitting in our kitchen discussing insurance matters with my mother, taking part in the Irish Club concerts in the late 60s and early 70s, chatting with him at the office or in the street, laughing together, him with that Irish twinkle in his eye. Merv was a kind and gentle man - a great man. I will always remember him.

"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage." Have courage my friends as you say goodbye to a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and, friend. May he Rest In Peace. Laurie

My own interactions with Merv were summertime at Kesagami Wilderness Lodge, and in all of those interactions, the effervescent and effusive kindness of Merv shone through and bathed us as much as the sunshine in the heavens above us and I know that is where he currently resides and continues in that vein as before to shine.

He was also the only one who could out laugh Johnny and stop Johnny's laugh with a look....and while that (stopping) would occur from Johnny's side with reverence and love, it was (for those who know Johnny) nonetheless a remarkable feat. :)

Merv Sullivan

Sorry Jenny to hear of Merv's passing. I deeply regret not being able to drive up there at this time. I have not been in Kirkland for quite some time and always planned to drop in on You & Merv for a visit; that is what happens when we procrastinate. Merv was such a great guy and a wonderful example to all family and friends. I remember play catch with him on Baron Street for long stretches of time. You and your family & friends are in my prayers. He and Kevin were always the highlight of family get togethers and will be missed by all, I am sure.

Love Bob Barker.

The Sullivan family

Mr Sullivan was a big influence to me his kindness and caring always.
My mom says since I was 2 I knew him. John is a very good friend of mine like a brother almost. I remember hunting trips with Mr Sullivan funny and sharp and fun.
It a sad moment for me I feel deeply for Mrs Sullivan who is absolute sweetheart of a woman. I can’t imagine the grief after 60 years of marriage.
To John,Diane, and Myles I just want to say my deepest sympathy.

I’m sorry I couldn’t be with you. I’m not very well either.
My mom says her deepest sympathy to Jenny and family she also is ill.
My mom was telling me all the good times growing up with Mr Sullivan and a good friend of your mom.
She is very deeply saddened by your dad’s passing. She sends her deepest sympathy.

Your dad will be blessed by god for his giving kind nature to anyone crossed his path his dedication to community and family.

I hope you all move forward for admiration of great husband and father and grandfather and great grandfather.

God bless

Our deepest sympathies to Jenny and family. We have fond memories of Mervin who was always so friendly to us, I remember him visiting my grandmother in Hyndford when we were very young and many other visits over the years including our trips to Kirkland Lake and having Mervin, Jenny and others to our wedding in Ottawa in 2000. May he rest in peace.

Sympathies to the Sullivan Family. Merv was a family man, a community leader and a great Kirkland Laker who always took time to stop and chat. I'll always picture him playing the spoons accompanying Glenn Conrad on the piano. RIP Merv
