It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Milena Mihelcic. She was born on September 28, 1940, in Cerknica, Slovenia, to Franciska and Janez Telič and left us peacefully on October 14, 2025 to join them, her husband Frank, and brother Janez.
After Frank immigrated to Canada in the ‘30s, Milena later followed in 1962, and the two were married here upon her arrival, beginning a full life together in Kirkland Lake and the family cottage in Sesekinika, where they raised their family and built lasting friendships.
Milena will be forever loved and remembered by her children Carol (Irving), Joe (Sabina), John (Rowena), and Cindy (Glen), was a cherished Staramama to Scotia, Joren, Cole, Adam, Erin, Zoe, and Marcus and a beloved Teta to Vesna and Teja.
She was a factory worker in Slovenia before coming to Canada then volunteered for the local Catholic Women’s League, and worked at Canadian Tire, all while raising a successful family. Mom also loved tending her gardens at home and our family cottage in Sesekinika, where countless happy memories were made throughout every season. She enjoyed nurturing her plants and took great pride in the beauty she created around her. She loved being surrounded by flowers and plants.
Always creative, she expressed herself through painting and delighted in sharing her artwork with family and friends. Each piece she gave was reflective of her desire to bring joy to others.
What a wonderful sense of humour and an incredible gift for storytelling and gab she had. She loved sharing funny and extraordinary stories of her life and took great joy in the laughter that followed. She deeply valued those visits with family, friends and neighbours. If you went near the home, you could probably hear the polka music from outside!
The family extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who visited Milena and supported her throughout the years. Your kindness and companionship meant the world to her. Deep appreciation is also extended to the caring staff of Blanche River Health, Timiskaming Home Support, Victorian Order of Nurses, Paramedical personnel, and the many others who provided comfort and care.
A service to celebrate Milena’s life will be held at the Timiskaming Funeral Cooperative in Kirkland Lake on Thursday, October 23, 2025, with light snacks and refreshments at 5:30 pm followed by a private family burial service at a later date.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her creativity, her sense of humour, and the love and laughter she brought into the lives of all who knew her.
